I worked at Ciena full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The increasingly dwindling employee base still had a few folks left who were tenured enough to know the day to day process.

Cons

*Extremely high employee turnover
*Bonuses were a farce
*Terrible upper management
*Horrible cross departmental communication/cohesiveness
*Complete lack of concern about employees
*Zero corporate culture

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Years before joining Ciena I had heard it was a great place to work - after joining Ciena I heard this used to be such a great place to work. Clean house with old upper level managers/execs and bring in folks who want to work and can respectfully treat employees.

I worked at Ciena full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting technology, and nice people to work with. A very fast-paced environment, and lots of potential for moving around to different focus areas.
Wellness Reimbursement fund given to all employees.

    Cons

No real bonus or raises in the 4 years I worked there.
A lot of politics required for any vertical movement (promotions)
Very little communication between senior management and employees.
Varied work schedules with no consistency and forced shift schedules.
    Always in "crunch mode".
    Poor release scheduling and management.
Yes-man to customers, which constantly forces employees to adjust schedules and add features originally not planned in the release.
Technology can be varied some is current, and some is rather ancient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to your employees more instead of focusing on business growth. Cut out the management from Nortel, and get managers who have a sense of time and people management. Realize that there are realistic deadlines, and unrealistic deadlines. Unrealistic deadlines usually don't get met on time. ...or simply change the company name to Nortel.

I have been working at Ciena full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The Ciena can do attitude, just get the job done. Good benefits and pay. Good people and a commitment to training and learning

    Cons

Bureaucracy introduced since the Nortel deal is breathtaking- no wonder Nortel went bust !
Middle management are mostly Nortel and its hard to workout who took over who.
A huge change in the way customers are supported - an arrogant like it or lump it approach.
Metrics a big focus, but CSAT & ESAT pretty much ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the Bureaucracy before we all go the same way Nortel did. Cant you see adopting the working processes of a failed company is a mistake.
