Current Employee - VIP Staff in Port Coquitlam, BC (Canada)

I have been working at Cineplex Entertainment part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - free movies for you plus a friend (though there is a FORCED donation)
    - really flexible schedule, good for students
    - meet a lot of interesting people
    - fairly easy to get hired, interview process is fast
    - free movie posters (though all the good ones are always snagged up by managers, leaving with you with a lot of indie and mediocre movie posters)

    Cons

    - most fellow employees expect to get paid for not working
    - expected to do a lot of cleaning (butter doesn't wash off easily and your task suddenly becomes much harder when you realize the person working the previous night did a very insufficient job at cleaning)
    - work till 1am on weekend nights, very tough to get home unless you can drive
    - the pungent smell of butter doesn't wash off the uniform
    - managers don't know how to manage (managers are promoted from within by seniority, they start off as a regular employee and therefore are NOT trained properly to be a manager)
    - be prepared to take loads of flack from guests about everything imaginable, from prices to rodent sightings to bad movies
    - minimum wage (for the workload, I believe this wage is unfair and unappreciative)
    - opening weekends for superhero movies and book-to-film conversions (ala Twilight and Hunger Games) are insanely busy and stressful
    - female employees (particularly in the VIP area) often complain about being hit on and harassed by guests

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a managing course or too. Buy a Managing for Dummies book, even! Or resign.

It was a decent first job, though my management wasn't the most easy to get along with

    I worked at Cineplex Entertainment

    Pros

The schedules are put up online, so it's easy to check and request days off. The process itself (the computer systems) are fairly user-friendly and easy to read. The pay is typical, minimum wage but as a first job it has good hours for students.

    Cons

As with most jobs, there is a game of "favorites" that go on behind the scenes in management and for team leaders which at my branch was a little blatant. There can be some really late nights, so if you have an exam in the morning, it's going to be tough. Also, there's always an overpowering smell of grease and popcorn that stays in your hair and clothing for at least a day (with a shower and laundry).
