I have been working at Cisco Systems

Pros

Great salary, dedicated staff, flexible work at home arrangements are great for people with families or other non traditional circumstances

Cons

Lack of face to face collaboration, only see manager in person once every three months, very demanding, long hours and difficult to take pto

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better criteria for promotion to or selection for management positions. Management is not highly skilled and seem to be reflecting a passive agressive modality which runs rampant in company

Was a great place to work until they started shuffling jobs overseas in droves, then it lost its sparkle.

    I worked at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Compensation, benefits are very good. Performance based equity. Work time is flexible. Component vendors will bend over backwards to get their product designed in. Engineering staff is top notch. Good people to work with. HW design tools are best avail.

    Cons

HW engineering a dying breed at Cisco. Focus is on SW feature delivery. SJ is the center of excellence and the remote US locations are just support sites. Development teams are global - expect late night conf calls with china, india, malaysia. Internal support of design tools is weak. Layoffs have become a way of life. Morale has dwindled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give engineers confidence that their job won't be moved overseas. Show more support for US sites outside of SJ and RTP. Stop the never ending re-orgs. Learn from the smaller, focused companies that have stolen your market share. Figure out how to get the entrepreneurial spirit back into the company.

Solid intern experience but lacks in work culture

    I worked at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Cisco treats interns well and makes sure they're taken care of with good pay, interesting activities and some free swag. You get to work in an area of the company that interests you, so you're not just thrown anywhere at random. How you enjoy the experience will definitely rely on your manager, mentor and team.

    Cons

Most of the engineers at Cisco seemed like your stereotypical engineer: working in front of a computer all day without any ability to communicate with normal people. Definitely a lack of work/life balance, with some engineers working crazy hours without any diversity in their lives. Not to say that Cisco doesn't have good engineers, but its hard to find one you'd want to sit down and have a beer with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a rough idea of what you want interns to do before they arrive and try to develop a culture that will attract a younger generation of engineers.
