Difficult to shine if you're not in San Jose or working on routing & switching.

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

good place to work. political climate is growing for last several years inside ... it is more like IBM or GE than what it used to be - where getting the job done counted most.

    Cons

seems most new jobs are being created non-US - even though this is a US based company. too political. too HR driven. too ISO driven.

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Overall a reasonable company to work for but nothing to write home about.
    Flexible working.
    Very smart people.
    Good products and vision.
Senior management "get it". Very charismatic CEO.

    Cons

Too many initiatives that never get fulfilled. Frugality is crazy for one of the biggest and most profitable companies in the world - e.g. soda and fruit removed from staff. No free gym for example which other large companies provide for free. Raises few and far between and too few promotions, especially for technical staff. Lost its way on Routing and switching but thank goodness this has been recognized and resources refocused. Training for such an innovative company amounts to little more than "read about it on the intranet or internal webexs that are always business focused. Training is what others do, not Cisco employees... You could work 24x7 and no-one would know, or care. "Visibility" is the key word at Cisco. If what you do is not visible to others you'll get no-where. Bring people in from outside on much higher salary and do not promote from within, even those who have developed significantly. Lost the focus of a start-up and too much emphasis on the CIO conversation.
All these things are correctable but they need to make rapid progress since able technical staff are drifting away from Cisco.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget that your staff are your key resource, Forget them and the company is finished. I like working for Cisco at the moment but I worry where I am going.
