I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Decent pay, decent benefits, work/life balance is poor in sales

Cons

Has become very political and full of managers with very poor people skills. Cisco no longer cares about its people or the entrepreneurial spirit that once thrived in all of us and took the company so far. Very hard to move up in the organization - many talented people are leaving or being let go because of poor management. Cisco was good to me for many years but it is no longer the company I loved so much.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the freedom to innovate and be recognized at lower levels - don't just "say it"..."make it happen" - Cisco has gotten very good at false promises. It is so sad that so many great leaders at different levels have departed because of the difficulty of career advancement.

    Pros

Amazing education on how to build industry leading products

    Cons

Politics and process became more important than customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring design for manufacture and design for test into the development process earlier, and think through long term product evolution. Once products are mature and market leading, ask about potential larger market adjanencies you can grow into instead of how to cut budgets 20% while only losing 3-5% marketshare.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people at Cisco are smart and hard working. Cisco pays a fair salary and has fair benefits.

    Cons

At the end of the day, it's just a job. There is limited financial upside compared to smaller companies in the Bay area. Much of the work and career growth opportunity is also moving to Asia. Understandable from a cost perspective, but not great for US employees.
