Pros

- A great opprtunity to work with some serioulsy talented people, especially out in the regions
 - Benefits and salary are above the industry norm
 - Ability to expand your experience through different roles within the company, out in the regions and at HQ

Cons

- You have to wonder how some people especially at corporate are still in their roles.. they should have gone a long while ago, while some of the hard working, talented individuals have either moved on, or will soon do so, due to high frustration levels.
 - Still an old boys club mentality at the top...
 - Many executives have been there too long... need to bring in some fresh blood and a new way of thinking.
 - Recently lost its way with too much restructuring... it is breeding discontentment and bad morale in a big way.

Advice to Management

Consider what you are doing with all the restructuring, you are losing some of the wrong people as a result.... which is a big shame. Bring in fresh outside talent to drive change at the senior executive level.

    Pros

Colleagues know what they are doing. They are highly experienced in their respective fields and are friendly

    Benefits package is pretty nice.

    Cons

The company is so large that it is easy to get lost.

Florescent lighting, cubicles, the stereotypical corporate floorplan.

  2. Helpful (1)

Value Company that still thinks it's in growth phase

    Pros

There are a lot of very smart people at Cisco still. The company has built an amazing infrastructure that allows work to be done very smoothly. The linkages between functions is mature and well thought out, like the partnership with HR, the support from IT, etc. Cisco still has a great business, which means it has enough money to fund efforts so that they can be done right rather than shoe-stringing things together and not getting the outcomes that are possible.

    Cons

There are a lot of people at Cisco today that are managing their careers rather than their business. The environment has become much more political after 2001 and you have to be careful of people's intent. One of the more interesting cultural outgrowths of the increased politicization is that people are reluctant or unwilling to help others. They are intensely focused on promoting and positioning themselves without concern for growing and building teams and peers.

    Advice to Management

I would strongly recommend that the leadership start looking at what the culture has become. Empowerment has been eroded and accountability is not very strong. Frankly, the data being used in everything from business cases to outcomes has become so suspect at the company that it's difficult to have confidence in any decisions being made.
