    Pros

    800 pound gorilla in the networking industry. Involved in almost every aspect of communications. Opportunities to be involved in full product development life cycle involving almost any imaginable communications technology. Top performers compensated well above normal market rates.

    Cons

    Hasn't had competent top level engineering management since 2007. Complete chaos in engineering across all product lines. Fierce internal executive rivalries and frequent engineering executive shuffling make it very difficult to successfully complement projects. Company completes only a small number of the numerous of engineering projects it starts. Business units are littered with un-dead zombie projects that have undergone multiple direction changes and leadership changes. Cisco's new product development life cycle now generally exceeds technology life cycles. It takes so long to develop products that the product technology is obsolete when the product ships. Everything aspect of engineering possible is being out-sourced without out regard to the impact on quality, efficiency, and ROI. Cisco treats its engineers like farm animals.

    Advice to Management

    1. It is all about leadership. Crack open the Cisco cash hoard and spend whatever it takes buy competent engineering executives to fix your internal problems. 2. Get better at engineering outsourcing or stop doing it. Current efforts are failing and destroying quality.

    Pros

    Cisco develops cutting edge products and implements them internally often making employees beta users (fun and frustrating). Encouraging early adoption of new technologies benefits employees by making them savvy tech users across a broad range of technologies compared to peers. Working for Cisco commands a lot of respect from people outside the company. You have great 24-hour global emergency support whether you're on business or travel.

    Cons

    There's been a steep, and documented, decline in compensation in last 10 years. No raises unless you're promoted. Promotions are limited to approximately 15-20% of the workforce and are a 12-18 month cycle once your manager gets you in the queue. Couple this with the elimination of stock options for the majority of employees who are rated as meeting expectations (around 60% of the workforce) and uncertain bonuses means you lose money staying at Cisco unless you're on and stay on the promotion track. It's no secret that Cisco has a substantial chunk of cash which it keeps off-shore to minimize US taxes. While "good" for the bottom line this strategy also penalizes US employees because it keeps the pool of money for promos and raises small. The hours are relentless regardless of your role. It's not unusual to receive emails from peers in your time zone at 11:00 or 11:30 pm. There's subtle pressure to respond to emails from peers in other regions during their workday a.k.a. your evening. Working partial days on the weekend isn't uncommon and working Sunday evenings is standard. Training and education is under-funded. I was not approved for any professional training in the last five years of employment at Cisco.

    Advice to Management

    Train your managers so they are professionals. I had more bad than good managers ranging from micro-managers to hostile work environment liabilities. Bad managers are protected which drives off good employees. Pay employees, especially those in the US, a better wage. The line that employees benefit from Cisco growth and profitability is no longer true because there are huge inequities in the distribution.
