Cisco Systems Senior Software Engineer in San Jose, CA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Flexible work schedule depending on your immediate manager -- but if you are expected to work 20 hours -- does it really matter?
It might be possible to use your time spent at Cisco in lieu of course work towards Political Science degrees.

Cons

Not a technology-oriented company.
Not many US educated employees, nor many people with advanced engineering degrees.
Employees are usually Indian with a typical background (Indian education from unknown universities); get on the boat using India Consultancy Inc.; jump ship to Cisco and hang around there for a long time to become part of management -- continue hiring new people off the boat -- build empires and bask in the glory of sycophants.

Advice to Senior Management

Continue firing more engineers and take more fat bonuses; this way, you can accelerate the demise of the company. Atleast, this way the networking world will get a fresh start!

It's very true. The management likes sycophants who can talk but when it comes down to doing real work, can't do squat.

Agree. Been with Shitsco for 9 years, Don't know why. It's been going down hill since the tech bubble. CEO and Lack of Adult leadership take all the stock and money and work us stupid people around the clock. New Motto is "You should be thankful you have a job!" Most managers I've known have no clue on what a manager is supposed to do, and the others can't tell you in english.

Despite what the senior management think of themselves as some sort of Web 2.0 superstars or very hip techno geniuses, they are peddlers of internet plumbing. Give up the act. Stop the cheesy video broadcast to the employees thinking you are breaking new ground in communications. We engineers don't really understand what you are telling our customers. Internet 2.0, SOA, market adjacencies are total bull crap. Stop listening to management consultants. I am sure they cost alot but if you are an engineer you will know whether they are bullshitting or not.

@EE -- I think you are missing the point -- if the fat bonuses went away, all of us could be employed and do some interesting work. Your commment is something atypical of a bad competitive spirit -- I'm willing to work for anything -- in that process, you drive down the value of me (and yourself) in the future. Humans tend to think short-term -- once you have a job -- you will complain that you are not getting any money and so on...

@EE, we are already there. Chambers doesn't run the company, the Indians do that already. And the chinese will take control after the Indians rape the profits out of the company.
