I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

1. Execution focused organization. Decent work-life balance.
2. Relationship building is key to be successful - truly the human network at play!
3. Employee friendly culture. Great benefits.

Cons

1. A bit of top-down decision making. The firms' large size forces senior execs to bet only on mainstream trends (a liability for people who want fast moving careers).
2. Lot of presentation & meetings, in the name of collaboration, kills productivity compared to working in a startup/mid-size firm.

Neutral Outlook
Approves of CEO

Former Employee - Project Manager, Operation in San Jose, CA

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good, the ability to work from home (considering much of work is accomplished in conference calls / WebEx sessions) is a nice plus, some of the newer offices are nice. Compensation is good. Work/life balance is pretty decent (work from home, using devices to connect). Gym and medical center at the San Jose campus is very nice and is a great perk for local employees.

    Cons

Hyper-competitive environment encourages bad business behavior and investment choices. Insular and nepotistic management at senior levels. Cult-like 'love' of the CEO. Cafes are pretty good, but prices are high. Free snacks / drinks eliminated in cost-cutting back in 2009 (could save more cost by not rewarding the underperforming senior management :-).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The value of the company hasn't really moved in 10 years - why is John Chambers still CEO??

    Doesn't Recommend
