Solid company and vision, (mostly) positive management, disconnected layoff decisions.

Former Employee - A Customer Support Role in San Jose, CA

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

Total pay & compensation fair (75%+ compared to industry average of 50%.)
Opportunities to collaborate with highly talented people.
Moderate flexibility with working remotely when needed.
When the company performs, bonuse$ are nice.
Used to be a cheerful place to work.

Expect major shift in direction once per year, including upper management shuffles.
If the company is not performing, expect to see restructuring layoffs which reach higher than bottom performers. You may see promotion followed by layoff a year later.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not make restructuring decisions in a vacuum. Discuss individual performance with community and former leadership when making layoff decisions so soon after another reshuffle (new senior managers, directors, VP). Cisco used to be protective of employee positions (2001 for example.) Not anymore. Pressure to make quarterly numbers in a weak economy now means laying off 5+ year commended and formerly valued employees, all without upper management interviews or attempt to get to know you. No loyal employee expects 2-week notice delivered after deliberation by corporate leadership based in other parts of the world (unless that employee is already under a corrective action program to improve areas of weakness or expect to exit the company.) It's not the way Cisco used to do business, and it saddens me.
