Good Company but Lots of Inter-BU Politics at the VP Level

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice to be at the market leader (in many markets), lots of smart people, long tenures and lots of loyal employees.

    Cons

Reviews and performance ratings are based on popularity, not objectives / accomplishments. Visibility is everything at Cisco. If you do little or nothing, but maintain good visibility esp with upper management you'll do fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shift to a true MBO system for performance ratings and rewards.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Robust and expansive opportunities. Exposure with upper level management. Amazing training curriculum available. Friendly and upbeat work environment. Co-workers are all very supportive, and willing to help you succeed. Although there is a ton of "older" generations at Cisco, more often than not they are willing to lend a helping hand and provide guidance.

    Cons

Such a large company that you can often feel lost in the shuffle. Currently Cisco is hitting a rough patch in the networking/routing/IT space. Needs to be more pro-active in being at the forefront of the industry, and truly strive to be that #1 IT company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more pro-active then re-active. Clearly Cisco hires a ton of people..in addition to mergers and acquisitions. Why are we bringing 100% of people on board from M&A's? Find a way to do more with less when taking over a company. The people paying the price are often those most loyal to Cisco and those who've been around quite a while.
