Used to be a great place to work, now it's all about the politics and making sure you get your cut.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Good pay and bonus Coworkers are typically pretty good people, although they tend to be on the more conservative side. Culture has taken a turn for the worse.

Cons

Horrible leadership, tons of politics, terrible HR, basically you should treat yourself as a mercenary and look out for yourself. Also, since they put in water less toilets, you get the honor of smelling your coworkers urine. Great motivation to stop drinking water during the day which saves the company valuable revenue.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pretending employees are stupid, own up to your mistakes and replace Chambers.

Used to be a great place to work, now is pretty dull

Former Employee - Manager in San Jose, CA

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-If you are a Sr. Mgr (grade 12) and above, your total compensation is pretty lucrative
-Remote working policy is good for those that are not at SJ headquarters or have children to attend to at home
-Still carries a pretty decent brand name on a resume (although no longer the top of the heap in the tech sector, such as Apple, Google and Facebook)

    Cons

-If you are under Sr. Mgr level, salaries and total comp are no longer competitive in the marketplace
-Old, stodgy culture. Lots of fat cats that do nothing but are collecting huge paychecks and preventing you from advancing
-Very political. More important who you know and how fancy you can make a PowerPoint than your skillset
-Constant fear of layoffs. Especially if you are in a high cost location, such as San Jose
-More and more work offshored to India. Sr. Mgmt doesn't care about getting the best talent, but getting "adequate talent" at the cheapest price
-Not a fun culture. You go into the office and its completely empty. Absolutely no sense of camaraderie.
-Dismal outlook. Earnings are forecast to dwindle as are margins. Additional layoffs expected. Very little in terms of raises/promotions
-Too many kool aid drinkers. You'll see it on this board about it being a great place to work. Don't believe the hype. These are people that probably haven't experienced anything else and have already advanced above their skillsets (cannot find comparable pay elsewhere).
-Corporate strategy not in line with industry trends. Chambers used to be an innovator. Now he's risk averse and is just milking it until retirement, as the company continues to bleed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Get a new CEO and Sr. Mgmt team that can help right size the sinking ship
-Focus on developing and promoting young talent. There is a serious brain drain and with young people ditching Cisco, its not primed for continued growth
-Be more strategic about how layoffs occur. Trim the fat cats but ensure compensation for those that actually get the work done is market competitive and that younger folks can better see a career path
