The early years were very fulfilling but the culture has changed drastically and the fun is gone.

Current Employee - Senior Program Manager in San Jose, CA

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Very large company
There can be lots of opportunity
They have a ton of cash

Cons

Very large company, very hard to get things done now
There is basically no travel allowed unless it's for customer business
The culture has shifted to large company mentality, it takes too much red tape to get anything done

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the "old" Cisco. Have the annual sales conferences again. Ignite the spark that made Cisco great.

Current Employee - Network Engineer in Richardson, TX

I have been working at Cisco Systems as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to begin a network engineer career. Gain hands-on experience with all of Cisco's hardware and applications. Access to internally-developed tools, pre-release software, etc. My manager paid thousands of dollars for me to attend a CCNP course -- abundant resources for professional development as well as gear.

A real balance between work and personal life. I was given the option to start as early as 6am or as late as 10am, as well as to work entirely from home.

Contractors are treated like "regular" employees -- no discrimination or loss of privileges!

    Cons

All the typical frustrations of working within a large corporation - e.g. a bureaucracy, manpower and fiscal waste, some internal politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more circumspect about the goals of each business unit

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great exposure to technology and corporate culture. Good work/life balance. Decent compensation and great benefits.

    Cons

If you stay in one role for more than a few years you could end up stuck there. Not to mention things become repetitive very fast so move around in order to stay relevant and continuing to learn. Management is not in sync across the bored so you can be a super star on one team, but a complete failure based on the criteria of another team. This is harmful to those who want to move around in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More meaningful feedback on what it takes to reach the next level in your career. Set concrete expectations across the board to help maximize performance.
