I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Cisco did not tear up the start-up I worked for when it acquired it, and we managed to retain some of the character that we had before.

Cons

Very difficult to get noticed in such a large organization, and no clear direction. I expected that a large company such as Cisco will be less "Quarterly profit" driven. The many layers of management - boards, committees and what not - make product decisions very difficult to drive in a timely manner

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break the company into smaller entities and let these excel by independently driving for success. The size and heft is slowing the company doen and making it less competitive

    Pros

    Good pay and Benefits package

    Cons

Company taken over by bean counters who bend over to pick up nickles letting dollars bill fly over their heads.Cisco culture has been replaced through the addition of employees from other large companies, while losing long term employees who are leaving both voluntarily and involuntarily in droves. The result is a dilution of culture and a race towards big company mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the old Cisco based on performance and creating a win win for both the company as well as the employees and customers. Stop cutting top performing long time employees in order to bring in cheaper talent as the brain drain will kill you. Alcatel, Lucent and Northern Telecom are companies that Cisco used to make fun of and now they are beginning to look and act just like them!

Upper management needs to stop and take a breath. You cant build a house on a bad foundation and the employees are the foundation of success for Cisco.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to learn and carve out your own path of expertise, but that changed a couple of years ago.

    Cons

Politics have gotten out of control, good people are no longer recognized for their good work, its all about perception and visibility even if you get nothing of substance that impacts the business done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to keep and reward people who get real work done, not those who show off with pretty PowerPoints. The company is not the great place it once was, its a big shame.
