I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

It can be a good gig if you find the right manager. Lots of resources and training. A good place to learn.

Cons

Corporate overhead, reorganizations, scant pay raises and no promotions, not much upside.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many missteps, bad M&A, failed products to many empty suits. Many of you need to move on.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

When you find a good team to work with in the marketing organization, the experience can be very rewarding. Progressive managers will create the job around the employee skills and passion. There's lots of opportunity to make a difference.

    Cons

Cisco still has too many directors and VPs that attend perpetual meetings each day but otherwise provide limited value to the business. The marketing staff are program managers that outsource the real work to agencies and contractors. But they'll pay six-figure salaries to people that provide this "statement of work" coordination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Marketing org needs more oversight. Also, the current strategic plan to be the "#1 IT company" is not a good fit for the company's core competency -- still IP Networking.
