An old guard networking company that is defending its turf in the face of open source in a declining hardware market.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

It can be a good gig if you find the right manager. Lots of resources and training. A good place to learn.

Cons

Corporate overhead, reorganizations, scant pay raises and no promotions, not much upside.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many missteps, bad M&A, failed products to many empty suits. Many of you need to move on.

Cisco has great benefits but growth opportunities are limited.

    Pros

Cisco has great pay, and benefits. You can have a Retina Macbook as your work computer. And working from home is an option.

    Cons

Cisco growth has slowed so the challenges are typical of what you could expect from a mature company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cisco needs more internal startups. And the company needs to kill failed projects quickly rather than letting them languish for years.

I was happy at Cisco for a long time, but then got burned out.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Work with smart, engaged people in a collaborative environment. The company has the power to shape markets, and has clout when working with customers and partners.

    Cons

Always working...no downtime. It is expected that you are available/accessible at all times, including nights and weekends. Downsizing has only increased the pressure on those that remain. There is still too much bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate some additional layers of management, as there are too many people that can say no and not enough people who can say yes.
