Pros

Lots of opportunities within the company. Culture helps you succeed. Make your own hours as long as you get your work done and are productive.

Cons

Doesn't pay as much as private sector.

Good place for mid to late career years

Former Contractor - Contractor in San Jose, CA
Former Contractor - Contractor in San Jose, CA

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor

    Pros

Extremely stable. Calm, solid, place to work. Serious, skilled co-workers who have lives outside of work but who care about their jobs. It is a very "adult" working environment (as opposed to start up companies or other big companies that are big but chaotic). Good for mid to late career.

    Cons

Not ideal for early career development. Structure is good but the flexibility slows down the learning curve. Lots of long time people so fresh ideas are fewer and further between. If you are an employee, you may become a contractor. If you are a contractor you may not get renewed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little less flexible. Hire back as employees your best contractors. Keep them there through good and bad times.
