I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (more than 5 years)

Pros

Lots of smart people, ever-changing technology at the core and edge level of networking, decent benefits (used to be better)

Cons

Layoffs are constant, and no one is safe. Cisco has gone from a once-cool Silicon Valley tech startup to a Big Company that is scrambling to stay relevant by buying up other startups (and then killing them).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Making changes to improve the stock price is one of the biggest mistakes any CEO can make--classic MBA case studies.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You can learn a lot at Cisco and gain exposure through rotations into varied functional groups. Cisco has excellent benefits and opportunities for development.

    Cons

Cisco is pushing for the hew college grad, is gearing up for the annual layoff by identifying the bottom 15%, and is making it difficult to move to new jobs in the San Jose area. Not only are new hires focused on RTP, but any internal movement is limited as well. There seems to be a subtle undercurrent to move anyone over 50 out either by limited restructure or by limited opportunity for movement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open with the employees, make sure that the strategy is being communicated more clearly, and be cognizant of the impact the recent actions have on your reputation, There are too many overlaps in functional teams and not enough validation that the utilization of consulting firms is really paying off.
