Cons

Globalization means long days, a bit of herd mentality is creeping in - be careful with better together slogan some people interpret it to mean everyone doing the same thing

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Stability - no one is going to buy Cisco any time soon (though there is still attrition). Incredible wealth of resources available. Lots of super-smart people running around. Lots of market share in every virtually every product line, and the cachet that comes with the Cisco name.

    Cons

Huge company. Too many competitors with better technology. Cisco can't be expected to turn on a dime, but the products need to ramp faster. The whole "end to end" argument is getting stale with a lot of customers - we need to innovate in areas other than revenue and market share or both will ultimately suffer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Innovate. Product cycle times HAVE to improve. The "Advanced Technologies" are at least 1-2 years behind much of the competition. Also, quite a few of the products have a lot of buggy code. Entire releases are to be avoided because of instability. Many customers have to make the difficult decision between "new, needed features" and "stability" far to often.

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

    None really at this stage.

    Cons

Dealing with too many 'technically below par" engineers and even worse the Managers who are technically incompetent. Hence your learning will be limited. If you stick long enough, you will never come out of this mess because you won't get any outside jobs with your primitive skills you end up learning here at Cisco.
I deal with great many business units and groups within Cisco. There are lot of unproductive people who does not have enough work to do. Like the product managers. Most of these product managers will not have their job plates full for a good portion of an year.
This is also true for lots of engineering managers and directors. Essentially they are misusing the public investment with poor money management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop technical competency. Which means getting rid of most of the Senior management. Because these managers are not capable of achieving the required technical competency. Hire and train the new blood.
