Former Employee - Portfolio Manager in New York, NY

I worked at Citi full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

I had many good reasons 10 years ago...

Cons

Complete disregard for employees.
Deep employee distrust in upper management - the main reason the company is not likely to recover any time soon.
Upper management extremely out of touch with the rest of company
Human resources function like company's law firm
Citi has instilled a corporate culture where mediocrity and futility are empowered at expense of talent and new ideas.
The company has gotten too big to be managed effectively. There was a feeling that senior management had no idea my unit existed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that people are the most important part of your business. They come before clients and shareholders. Without good people there is no good business. Do not say you care about your employees, show it. Your own employees do not trust you at all right now. Earn their trust by showing you care about them.

I have been working at Citi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are generous and the work can be challenging. Flexible work schedules allow me to work from home frequently where I am more productive. The culture can be positive but I have learned that the work culture is very dependent on the site where you work and your immediate team. Each location has a different culture and work-life balance.

    Cons

Working across the globe means a lot of phone meetings at odd hours. There are very few in-person meetings, which can make building relationships difficult.
