I worked at Citizen Schools

Pros

Health insurance was offered for part time teachers, which is a great gig if you are in college. Great information and structure for employees and clear tracks to advancement. New sites or those in transition can be challenging, but a part of the job of creating community.

Cons

Can really be challenging if the school you are working at is not on board, but that is not usually the fault of CS.

I worked at Citizen Schools full-time

    Pros

    -Great People (overall)
    -"Work" from home
    -Location

    Cons

-A lot of the staff seem to be bi-polar
-Equipment is not the same level of quality if your are not based out of HQ
    -Over-achieving staff across the network
-Very "clique" type atmosphere (males AND females)
-Information is not passed between campuses and sometimes departments
-Each office is it's own colony (that is a bad thing)
-You should not be eligible for food stamps working at this place
    - ^ ^ You work slave driver hours and are not compensated for it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This place has the potential to be great if they didn't compare itself to TFA so much. Every answer shouldn't end with "well at TFA they do... etc" Please pay competitively and then you could retain employees. Paying in gift cards is not a way to show appreciation, a raise is. Information needs to flow better across departments and campuses and regions other than the great jamboree that is Summer Institute. In terms of hours worked, the Fellows should be the highest paid employees as they are in the schools building the relationships with the students, not executives who only set foot on campuses for photo opportunities. Work life balance really depends on who your manager and department is. Some people can leave early, some people stay way too late.

I do not recommend this place to friends. I tell them to join TFA instead as all of Citizen Schools employees seem to migrate there anyway.
