Current Employee - Customer Support in Santa Barbara, CA

I have been working at Citrix Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

- Flexibility for some employees
- good pay and benefits
- many great people to work with on the individual contributor level
- great place to work
- high respect for the individual
- generally nice people to work with
- employees generally empowered and trusted
- well balanced for a company this size at this level of growth, operationally
- recognition for outstanding efforts

Cons

There are actually very few cons, most of these observations are isolated and also apply to most companies.
Citrix Online in Santa Barbara
- politics and CYA running rampant
- human resource allocations in key operational areas not keeping up with growth
- a lot of talk about ability to design and grow your own career, but difficult to be considered for other positions, especially outside your own department, most roles hired from outside rather than recognizing and developing talent from within
- inexplicable hiring, unqualified or inept people for many important roles, in this economy and for such a great employer it should not be difficult to hire better
- few employee growth, career enhancement or training offerings
- lack of accountability in leadership and management, no one wants to recognize, call out, admit to or openly correct mistakes
- hierarchy enforced caste system. if you're not in management, a common perception that if you're not given as many benefits and opportunities and are expendable
- very little career advancement opportunities unless you're in the upper echelon or inner circles, then sometimes people are promoted to roles they are not qualified for or in quid pro quo
- inequality in work load management and poor strategic allocation of resources
- greater need to recognize, promote and retain their best talent in the ranks
- some departments and teams overworked and can't get resources, others have more than enough resources and a great work-life balance
- asked to cut costs at bottom of hierarchy while waste is rampant with sr. management and execs
- disconnected and ineffective marketing considering the size and spend of marketing department. marketing and sales departments disconnected
- products slow to improve. lack of real innovation, same old products with few new features and not competitive
- perception of total disconnect between Sr. and Exec leadership and what's going on at the front line - lack of partnerships with other companies and integration with other products. Missing out on strategic business development with 3rd parties could impact long-term growth and profitability
- long-term strategic vision not well or clearly communicated, growing concern among the ranks on direction
- middle and upper management only want to hear good news, lack of effort to address real issues
- poor new hire orientation
- no distilling or reinforcement of corporate culture, not well communicated

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep Citrix Great! Hire better, smarter, passionate, genuine and more inspiring people and make efforts to communicate and encourage what is mostly a great culture. Recognize talent and promote from within. Get connected to the people on the front lines who work with customers every day and ask them what they need to do their job better and enable them to offer better service and support for customers. Solicit anonymous feedback and share it openly, take action on recurring themes that need to be addressed. Instill accountability, have leadership openly admit where improvements can be made.

I worked at Citrix Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful coworkers, and some great first level managers.
Engineering managers (at the levels where I worked with them) have excellent technical ability.
Engineer-friendly culture - being a "geek" is good.
Do a good job of getting rid of the occassional hiring mistake.
Extremely flexible about hours, locations, etc.
Use their own products, which work well for things like remote access
They seem to be good at marketting, profitability, growth etc.
Better than average at integrating acquisitions without destroying their culture/ability to be effective. 3 years ago I would have said "Great at integrating ..."

    Cons

Support departments (HR, facilities, IT) are getting bureaucratic, paternalistic, and generally interfering with getting the job done. Uniformity is now trumping effectiveness. This appears to be an ongoing trend - still not at an extreme level, but painful when compared to 5 years ago.
A lot of conference calls between departments separated by 12 hours of time zones (California and India) which generally involve half the participants working in the late evening (9-10 PM) local time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rein in the would-be bureaucrats in facilities etc.

I have been working at Citrix Systems full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great Atmosphere with Leaders that care. The company is growing at a fast rate allowing for your career to grow easily within the company.

    Cons

I haven't been in the company a long time, but in the short time I've been there I would say that there are many things happening within the company, which is great. The only problem with this is there are so many activities happening that some weeks it can be difficult to do your job, and regardless of what's happening you always have to reach your numbers.
