I worked at City Year full-time (more than an year)

Pros

-worked with fantastic students who made it all worth it
-met some wonderful people (and some weird ones!)
-mostly positive experience within my school with teachers and administration

Cons

-management is horrible: lack of accountability; top-down communication is flawed; sometimes rude or purposefully unhelpful; general inability to effectively listen to corps members' criticisms and suggestions
-such a childish culture that actually promotes an aura of public shaming inside the schools
-lack of real authority in the classroom leads us to be viewed as babysitters most of the time
-tutoring involves, in many cases, just playing catch-up with missing assignments instead of real teaching
-trainings are so unproductive and unnecessary (and they happen all the time!)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm astounded at how unorganized this organization is, especially given the fact that you spend all of your time in meetings with each other. Let's try for some active listening next year! And it really is the quality that matters over quantity....so glad for next year's downsizing.

    Pros

High expectations for work with youth, which is hard to find in non-profits. Gain strong teamwork, management, and leadership skills. Excellent fit for anyone looking to work in education.

    Cons

Not an easy place to work for those with young children--flexibility is sometimes needed in terms of hours. Working in urban education is challenging for anyone. Not a place you will get rich, or anything close to it.
