I worked at City and County of San Francisco full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Good Team work, great environment, a chance to learn in different aspect of your career, best compensation for interns in the market

Cons

The City not always has positions available in the area that you are working on so after 6 great months of contract/work, you will have to move on and find a new job

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more positions for interns who gave their heart and soul to their projects

I have been working at City and County of San Francisco

    Pros

Come work for the most two-faced people I've ever met out of all organizations I've worked for!

    Cons

If you have documentation and witnesses of being bullied, guess what, not only will no one do anything, but management will join in!

Conservative and politicized bureaucracy managing a city of innovative people.

I worked at City and County of San Francisco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

For those interested in making government work, San Francisco has potential to be a great place for innovation in local government practice because the city is uncommonly rich and the culture of the people supports progressive causes and risk-taking. Great compensation and benefits. City government has ample resources to try new things.

    Cons

The bureaucracy is heavily politicized. Advancement in management is earned primarily by doing the bidding of the mayor's administration. Current city administration risk-averse and obstructs or even penalized efforts at innovation. Agencies fragmented and silo-ed. Strong unions and civil service protections limit performance management. IT systems not up to par with contemporaries. High levels of waste and patronage. Parochial and often ignores emerging best practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give risk takers more space and support for innovation. Hold employees accountable for the lack of performance. Stop patronage handouts to connected but ineffective community based organizations.
