I have been working at City of Calgary part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

friendly, laid back atmosphere. Lots of training available and career options are endless if you want to switch fields

Cons

It's unionised and the management is quite old school. There is a lot of prefrential treatment and it's a real boys club

It is too much political. The manager do not have all the experience. Most people can not advance in their career.

I worked at City of Calgary full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Compressed Work Week, Teleworking and little stress environment. People are great to work with. Good training. This employer would be ideal for new grads / employees who want to learn in a new area.

    Cons

Unionized position, so it doesn't matter how hard to work, you will get the same raise as the guy who doesn't do anything. There are a lot of people that work really hard there and some can be categorized as "City Workers".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mentor and empower young leaders to replace the dinosaurs. It is time for change and look into the private sectors for ideas.

Get rid off the union, they are a waste of $$$ for the professional workers in IT.
