I worked at City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County

Pros

Opportunity to help community and citizens. If you have good ideas you can try them. Benefits package ok. Good job security.

Cons

No yearly cost of living increases. Mreit raises are typically very low and do not increase to the level that health insurance costs do.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

All managers should be required to take management training class offered by the city--senior managers included. Refresher training should also be required every 1 or 2 years.

I have been working at City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Descent pay, fair number of regular job postings, normal benefits (don't be fooled thinking they're "great" because it's the government), usually plenty of work to do/projects to work on, good IT support (providing computers and software needed to do your job), relatively stable employment.

    Cons

Definitely a big government entity that spends a lot of money and has a lot of places to hide ineffective staff, very happy to outsource tasks that could/should be performed by in-house well-paid staff, limited growth opportunities to management or senior positions, slow pace of projects due to over-analysis. Easy to get caught in the wash of not making "market rate" over the course of several years of no or little raises but market rate increases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more senior positions and fill them with people who deserve them and are qualified to share that senior experience. Rely on staff's experience and knowledge to make decisions; don't second guess every decision, even in an indirect manner of requiring over-analysis of a subject. In a sense, let staff earn their keep rather than ride the tide on a cushy salary with little required of what they were hired for. Lastly, be considerate of accepting bonuses and raises at all times--especially times when staff receives no raises.
