Current Employee - Electrical Engineer in Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

-Very flexible work schedule with every third Friday off
-Able to bring in lots of new technology
-Excellent support from management (at the branch level)

Cons

-Capital budgets are becoming more restrictive and the ability to introduce new technology quickly is less likely
-No real consistent career path unless you want to move into management and away from a technical role
-No way to plan as one cycle your may have a tsunamai of funds and the next nothing

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Return to the every second Friday off for management staff and create an engineering ladder that more accurately lines up with APEGA.

    - Decent wage

    Cons

    - Senior management is often distant, if not completely inaccessible
    - Management is slow to enact changes
    - The city is too keen to enact broad policies without considering the impact they will have for employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become more accessible to average employees (reply to emails maybe?) and take the time to understand what an average day looks like for employees so you can better understand their concerns.
