I worked at City of Minneapolis

Pros

Decent benefit package. Some good training programs

Cons

Union environment keeps people on that do not want to perform or work cooperatively. Outdated facilities. Very poor management at upper levels, keeps people working in fear

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people better!! Do not treat people like they are disposable commodities. HR, do more than just support bad management!

I worked at City of Minneapolis

    Pros

Generally good compensation, but that is if you can deal with incompetent, lazy co-workers. Minneapolis as a city is generally good and there are certainly bright spots among the departments.

    Cons

Lazy, incompetent, and inefficient workers fester within the confines of the many government jobs at City Hall. Wasteful spending is rampant and generally, the employee work ethic is completely subpar.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold employees accountable for their performance. Promote those that work hard and are doing a good job and fire those who don't.

I have been working at City of Minneapolis

    Pros

    - adding a few more people of color in management positions, though they may be limited in knowledge and experience

    Cons

    - Top heavy in highly paid managers. Too large a city council for a city its size.
       - Houston 2.1 million 14 Council members
       - Austin 790,000 6
       - Denver 600,000 13
       - Miami 399,000 5
    - too focused only on good news, does not listen well to employee's opinions
    - little communication between departments that make it harder to resolve problems (attitude, "we've
      always done it this way.")
    - much favoritism towards long-time employees
    - seldom are annual reviews done, and almost no reviews on managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

During this budget crises, cut back on staff AND managers AND number of Council members and their Aides. Reduce salaries evenly across all jobs, including managers and Council members.
