Former Employee - Counselor for Parks and Recreation in Ottawa, ON (Canada)
Former Employee - Counselor for Parks and Recreation in Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I worked at City of Ottawa

Pros

- Fun job if you enjoy working with children/ enjoy skateboarding (you get to skate pretty much the entire day)
- Essentially being paid to do nothing, counselors would regularly sleep on the job
- Camp style is very laid back, the 'programming' would deteriorate into a constant state of 'free-time' (ie. let the kids do whatever they wanted as long as they aren't destroying things/hurting themselves.) This meaning you don't have to do any programming after the 2nd day.
- Co workers are generally very laid back

Cons

- The kids at skateboard camp are generally the stereotypical brats associated with skateboarding, you WILL hate half of them by the end of the week
- Male orientated environment, there will be a maximum of 1 female counselor every summer, that is if they even bother to hire one
- Will get you no where, do not think that working camp for three years straight will get you farther than that.
- Co workers are generally MORONS. They are sometimes more idiotic than the campers.
- New skatepark coordinator(relative to when I left) is completely incompetent
- After having worked there, you will confidently say you would never place your kids in that camp, or recommend it to any parents.
- Each week, a kid WILL seriously injure themselves. (I'd say due equally to the kid's stupidity, and to the inattentiveness of counselors)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a skatepark coordinator that can actually do the job. Restructure the camp so that as a counselor, I would actually recommend that parents send there kids there instead of just sticking their kids in their backyard (which would be so much safer)

I have been working at City of Ottawa part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, easy student hours, easy work, benefits,
happy that there is a union,
opportunities for advancement up until a point (head lifeguard),
clean and adheres to health and safety policies

    Cons

incompetence of management, inappropriate manager relations, managers promote based on favorities, not based on actual ability and skills, lots of staff that shouldn't be working there but are anyways because of the union.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire new managers not because they are your friends but because they're competent. Consider not being so emotional and becoming friends with staff. Upper management should be monitored to see if they're actually doing their job (a lot of them just don't come in to work some days or leave for 3 hour lunch breaks)

I worked at City of Ottawa part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The job is great if you are student. Can become a head guard quite quickly if you prove you want it. The people are very friendly and you get many breaks. You can learn a lot of important life skills like first-aid and safety tips. Teaching young children is extremely rewarding.

    Cons

The hours were very unpredictable, could get extremely hot inside and training was often repetitive. It's not a great training ground if you want to do anything else other than be in a first-aid related job. You can never be "off your game" because people's lives are on the line.
