Peer Mentoring at-risk Youth, many job programs to assist youth in receiving work experience. Park and Recreation staff, Directors truly cared about each Participant.

    Pros

    Public sector provides a unique opportunity to develop and flex your leadership, process improvement, and change management muscles. There's plenty to do and little initiative from senior management, who's mostly concerned with avoiding risk at the expense of real progress. The chances you'll effect change are little to none, but don't be discouraged. The real value you'll get from this job is developing the ability to identify areas of improvement (this organization is rife with them), trying out various approaches to presenting and persuading management to sanction your vision, and, if you're lucky and you gain support, leading people toward making a real difference.

    Cons

    This organization is extremely change adverse. Most of the processes being followed today are in place because "that's the way we've always done it." Attempt to introduce an idea and you'll be strongly discouraged from pursuing it. Their antiquated step-and-grade positions do not allow for growth based on performance. You must pursue other positions within the organization or outside if you want to grow professionally. In the nearly 2 years I've been with the organization I've noticed that highly educated/skilled people leave the organization within 2 or 3 years, while those who couldn't make it in the private sector stay in place (please note that this is an unfair generalization as there are some bright individuals who remain with the organization because they are passionate about public service), so it's very common for unqualified individuals to manage entire divisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Actively engage in attracting and retaining real talent. Train or replace unqualified personnel. Provide opportunities for growth -- when your people grow, they bring excellence to the organization. Take some chances, covering-your-ass shouldn't be your primary objective.
