Pros

Promotions are easy to get.
A lot of turn over makes it easy to get a promotion when ever.
Opportunity to expand knowledge.

Cons

Promotions depend on how much a senior employee likes you, not if you're good for the position.
Too much drama from staff and management.

Current Employee - Library in Plano, TX

    Pros

Even in these tough economic times the City employees are always striving to exceed the citizens' expectations and do the most with the resources at hand. The City provides extensive training to all levels of workers in order to make sure everyone is one the same page in regards to the image of the City. The City provides resources for employees to grow in their jobs and move up the ladder.

    Cons

Employees have not received a raise in 3 years and their out of pocket expense for health insurance has gone up each year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to maintain the level of services the citizens of Plano have come to expect, taxes are going to have to be raised. Plano can not continue to have the lowest tax rate of all the surrounding communites and continue to grow and attract corporate headquarters. The challenge will be to get the elected officials on board.

    Pros

The city of Plano is not a bad place to work. They provide adequate compensation, a very high quality medical insurance plan. It is a good place for a family man.

    Cons

The city unfortunately is a government job which means that they have almost no carrot to offer and very little stick. this leads to a ever present lack of urgency as well as a often boring work place. Of course there is the common bureaucracy of city employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The need to find a way to reward personal accomplishment and not just once a year but constantly, this could lead to better morale.
