Former Employee – worked at City of Redmond, Washington
Pros – Co-workers and management are very supportive. Very friendly place to work. Government jobs are always excellent, though my experience has been as a seasonal worker (for over one year). As a seasonal, non-salaried employee, you have the ability to work overtime at special events or for other managers within the department for additional hours.
You are permitted access to the city's gym, small, but adequate. The recreation department is a close knit group; even as a seasonal employee you will have the opportunity to meet many people at all levels of the organization. The city really is an excellent place to work.
Cons – Pay and benefits as a seasonal employee. You get .50 cent raises for each summer you return, doesn't matter what your education or past experience has been. Difficult to move up or be hired for a full-time position within recreation for several reasons: 1. Recreation jobs for city government in general are difficult to find. 2. When you do find a job, especially in government, they usually have someone in mind to fill the position, but have to go through the hiring process to make it seem fair. 3. Nobody leaves their job! It's an excellent place to work...nobody moves!
Advice to Senior Management – Hire supervisors who have current knowledge and understanding of the people they are supervising. This can be through internal hiring of people and moving them "up the chain." This is not to say current management/supervisors are not competent, but just future reference.
