Former Employee - IT Staff in San Diego, CA

    Pros

Years of service with the City of San Diego give one an edge in keeping his or her job when its "layoff" time due to seniority level. This organization will do its best to transfer staff affected by reduction in force (RIFS) to other departments that may have similar positions that are available.

    Cons

Even admitted by senior management, It's very challenging to compete with fellow applicants in interviewing for a position one is very qualified for due to hiring department's preference in hiring personnel that already have served for them. In other words, hiring departments will still conduct interviews for formality sake, but they already have someone in mind for them to hire, and it's usually the person they want to promote within their department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

City of San Diego management should encourage its staff to show and serve their best skills plus provide continuous ways of improving their skills especially in the field of IT which is ever changing.

Former Employee - Lifeguard II in San Diego, CA

    Pros

flexible hours, decent pay compared to other cities, able to change job titles rather easily once in system. Lifeguard pay is better than other health clubs or ymca's. Only requires to maintain certifications which is worthwhile. The City of San Diego pools are nice facilities to work at and less stressful than working at the beach. Beach pay is not that much more.

    Cons

big, pay is not flexible. Don't be looking for a raise, it's all paperwork for the City. Benefits for part time employees are either non-existant or minimal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

do your job or move on. Make it a better, more efficient place to work.
