Public Sector value factors don't often favor progressive IT; City of Tacoma does this well.

I have been working at City of Tacoma

Pros

Stability and the overall notion of 'status quo' prevails which averts the hurry factor associated with private sector employment. This usually promotes a balance of work and home life. Government holidays and a generous benefits package also offer the prospect of long term stability. There is no 401k type product, but there is a mandatory pension plan that self-funds through your mandatory contribution of your own base pay. The City matches a percentage.

Cons

Public sector never fosters the concept of urgent. Strategic planning is a long term, slow, process. Once you have obtained internal IT consensus then departmental/customer buy-in the version upgrade or new product is out of rev' or actually already being given a sunset date by the vendor.

Advice to Management

IT infrastructure must stay ahead of broad organizational needs. Departments/customers cannot be trained as 'in the moment IT specialist' to their level of satisfaction for every project that cost more than $199.99 . The improvement to business process, efficiency of staff use, continual improvement of 'ease of use' and no worry storage/performance (better than good enough) must be the sell points to be successful. Otherwise departments will see no value in having their Windows 95, x386, Access 99 ... systems upgraded or replaced.

    Pros

Opportunity to work in a wide variety of departments Opportunity for mix of office and field work Great educational experience Amazing building in beautiful location (Center for Urban Waters) Very flexible to employee schedules, especially as an EIT

    Cons

A lot of the staff is more focused on work than being outwardly friendly

    Advice to Management

Ensure that interns/EITs have at least two projects to alternate working on since some monotonous tasks can become life-sucking over the course of 8 hours
