Current Employee - Teacher in Las Vegas, NV
Current Employee - Teacher in Las Vegas, NV

I have been working at Clark County School District full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Working with the students is a very rewarding experience. The schools are quite structured and most have upbeat faculty cultures.

Cons

Administrative bureaucracy instills numerous policies and programs that waste money and consistently result in debates between the district and the teacher's union.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick with one series of procedures instead of 'throwing things against a wall and seeing what sticks.'

I worked at Clark County School District (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The kids, holidays off, weekends off, benefits.

    Cons

Bad work environment all around. Administration/Management is incompetent, unprofessional and retaliatory. bureaucracy, dirty politics, nepotism, vindictive behavior not only staff but Admin....No fair treatment across the board but favortism/nepotism.The ESEA union for support staff is horrible and have connections w/CCSD management-not on your side they set you up to fail. This district has alot of $$ that goes to the wrong purchasing and distributing. Accessive overspending and then want the tax payers to foot the bill for all their luxury purchases for their admin/management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many upper management-too top heavy who just sit and collect a paycheck. You do not need an access of "assistants" (assistant principal, assistant superintendent etc) while you sit & they do most if not all of your job. Overpaid management/administration . Unfair treatment and not the same to staff, favortism. You do not support or meet the needs of your students, staff & school. Why does admin/mgmnt need bonuses at end of year? You get paid to do a job you were hired to do and yet want more. That is why at end of year you want the tax payers to foot the bill for your accessive spending on your luxuries and bonuses by raising taxes..Purchading department should be audited by the feds (in all school districts ).You need to take a cut in pay-including the superintendents (all of them) and all administration because in reality it is the staff who do all the work...You give yourself raises (and bonuses) while the staff get a raise every 10 years...fair? I say bureaucracy indeed.

I worked at Clark County School District full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Various school locations to choose from, and pretty good health benefits (may be changing).

    Cons

High stress—Teachers out in long days, early mornings, and weekend hours. Teachers are always to blame. CCSD likes you to do things their way or the high way.

Incompetent administrations—Admin plays favorites. Always agree with them, or they will make your life a nightmare.

Very political—What teacher gets hired via an “in-personal” phone interview (according to the employee) when they are a Vegas resident? Really?! Pure politics.

Layoffs and pay cuts. – CCSD lays off teachers constantly and brings them back. All this talk about funding, however CCSD is constantly scrambling to fill vacancies. There is a reason they have such a high need for teachers.--they are not respected or treated humanely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give teachers a break. With all the additional trivial paper work and harassment by administration, that energy could be better used in the classroom. Step into the classroom and show us how to do something--model by example.
