Pros

They provide lots of training specific to your area, as well as extra support on request. It is such a large district that if you are unhappy where you are, there are usually similar positions at other schools in the district. If you are already an employee, look for new positions in April. If you are applying for the first time, make sure your application is submitted in time for you to start applying for specific positions around mid-May.

Cons

Same downsides as any other school district...change is slow to take place, funding seems misallocated at times, etc. I've seen more than a few instances of teachers becoming complacent and unmotivated to do what's best for the kids, and nothing is done about it. I think that's more an issue of how powerful the local teacher's union is, though.

    Pros

Departments work together for the good of the administration, teachers and staff.

    Cons

Sometimes the leadership can be the wrong person in the wrong job.

    Advice to Management

More leadership training and work harder to limit long term substitutes

  2. Stable, but frustrating

    Pros

Great benefits and secure job (once you've been there a few years). A lot of diversity and internal opportunities.

    Cons

Government bureaucracy can be frustrating to deal with. Not very forward thinking and new initiatives are very hard to get started.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff...they have a very good read about what's really happening out there in the schools and classrooms. They might be seeing more than you give them credit for. Your employees are not your enemy in trying to maintain the status quo, but rather your insight as to areas that you can improve and take the organization to the next level.
