Great training ground for marketing but politics-laden!

I worked at Clorox full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great training for marketers. Good classes and on-the-job training. You work with very smart people, and if you are fortunate enough to get an excellent manager, it is an extraordinary experience. Luckily, even the mediocre managers are fairly good -- you can learn SOMETHING. Clorox marketing jobs are also rotational, so every 1.5-2 years, you are challenged and stretched. Many great California marketers come out of here, and move on to great things. Small/medium sized companies all poach talent from here.

    Cons

Politics, politics, politics. It's a slower growth company (revenue growth of 3-5% each year) so much of the "competition" comes from inside as they hire smart, driven people who naturally compete. So don't just put your head down and work hard, you also have to do it publicly and find avenues to toot your own horn. After leaving though, I did appreciate the political exposure, as yes, every place has politics... and even Clorox can train you on that!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate individual differences and figure out how to let uniqueness flourish to build excellent, multi-faceted teams. There's a strong tendency for Clorox culture to fit a certain mold! - to the detriment of the firm and it's ability to think outside of the box and/or push boundaries for exponential growth.

I worked at Clorox as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Great HQ location: easy commute by transit; diverse workforce; social concern and sincere community outreach; terrific product design group.

    Cons

Stuck in the Eighties in terms of office decor and project management. Tenure with the company, not capability, yields seniority and the power to determine project direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to other huge companies, like GE, who have realized they're losing talent to less hierarchical, more readily changed organizations. Continue the uphill battle against your own to hire from outside--then let those outsiders have real influence.
