Pros

Out of college, the Research Associate position can be a great first job. Decent pay ($40K), and great, young colleagues. Decent benefits and 401k matching.

Growing company with opportunities to move up, however, there are caveats (see cons)

Once a quarter or so you get a free ticket to a baseball game with $20 to spend as well.

Cons

Monotonous work.

Many managers are inexperienced and overbearing.

Upper management is out of touch with best research practices and they constantly try to drive the processes that are used by the researchers instead of results that are achieved.

Even if you are promoted, you you are still undervalued/under paid and overworked. And the opportunity to move up again is many years off. I can't imagine staying at this company for the years required to move up vertically 2 steps.

Broken metrics system which does not reward the researchers who actually provide the most value to clients.

Advice to Management

Don't focus so much on the processes, focus on driving results. At least don't apply a one-size-fits-all approach to the 1000+ researchers.

Pay your employees more, this will lead to higher quality personal and better data.

Don't be implement minimum baselines with just a couple of weeks left in the quarter to screw employees out of bonuses.

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Nice office
    Young environment

    Cons

    Stressful metrics based environment
    Repetitive and rigid work day
Everything you do is watched and recorded by management and quality assurance
Poor communication, no one knows what's going on until people start getting fired

    Advice to Management

Focus on the quality of data rather than quantity of calls. Management needs to set metrics and stick with them, stop "load balancing" two weeks before the quarter ends to avoid giving people bonuses. The world does not communicate solely on the phone in 2013, which upper management refuses to acknowledge. Stop telling the researchers how much the stock price went up, and how much money you have made while changing policies to ensure that we have no chance of getting a bonus.

There are some very smart people from top colleges working as researchers at costar. They do not value their employees, and when the economy turns these people will find much better jobs. The work is tedious and not rewarding with little to no opportunity for advancement. If you get an offer (which isn't that difficult) I would advise you to keep looking and use costar as a last resort. The recruiters make this seem like a great place to work..but none of them were researchers.
