I worked at Codexis full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Codexis had a brilliant set of scientists to learn from, and science was incredibly fascinating, we were all in this together to help bring a positive change to the world!

Cons

Upper Management is utterly and comically incompetent, from department heads that have no clue about what's going on in the departments that they manage. People that do the actual research in the laboratory are the hardest working and least rewarded at the company.

Management keeps promising that they are working on saving the business, but they haven't landed any deals of significance since the new CEO took charge. Yet upper management keeps giving themselves titular promotions and salary increases while again, the people actually researching are told that they need to "run a lean operation"

People with dissenting attitudes are marginalized and ignored. There are no opportunities for advancement within the company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get yourselves out of the administration building and realize how hard working your R&D people are, quit insulting them and be honest about the long term prospects of your company. Own up to your failures and explain to your employees why you can't land business deals, no more smoke and mirrors and blaming the former CEO.

I have been working at Codexis full-time

    Pros

Plenty of FTO, 401K match, most of the benefits are okay

    Cons

Despite mutliple layoffs (company is about as lean as it can get), management piles on more and more work without stepping back to see the impact or consequences--they just expect the same throughput. The hardest working employees are least recognized (esecially during year end evalualtions). Management makes no effort to focus on career development for employees with out a PhD. No clear path for development and movement upwards--the only answer is "it just takes time". They are running the company into the ground and management seems delusionally optimistic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid the nepotism and open your eyes to how your employees are feeling during the tumultous times, especially when the outlook doesn't seem good. Evaluate how time is allocated for projects and understand how much work is required to complete the tasks at hand. Value and reward those who contribute the most to forward progress of projects, if you don't, those who work hardest and are the most productive will leave quckly.

    I worked at Codexis full-time

    Pros

Relaxed environment, nice location, and casual atmosphere. You can make your own schedule.

    Cons

This company is being run into the ground. They don't have a problem having parties or buying expensive gifts to prizes. There is a communication problem with this organization. A simple request is done by email. People are afraid to speak up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop spending the money on trivial things. Use the money to save people's jobs. Also the Facilities Manager is a joke. He does nothing, produces nothing, and justifies his job by dumpster diving.
