I have been working at Cohen & Steers

Pros

Best company in niche so learn a lot and good for resume, get access to important people in the real estate and investment industries.

Cons

Long hours, difficult senior people, young firm so some parts of company still evolving, too many process changes, unclear succession

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize people after they've done a good job, don't sweat the small stuff like tiny mistakes in work that is great overall

I worked at Cohen & Steers as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Very professional culture, filled with smart, talented and hard working people. Great learning experience. The company exposed its interns to different facets of the business and allowed them to pursue what was most interesting to them

    Cons

As with many other internships, the work can get boring quickly. Sometimes there isn't enough work and they don't know what to do with you, so you are stuck with nothing to do

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Its a strong program overall, but would benefit from adopting a rotation program to get their interns to dive deeper into different departments that might be appealing to them.

I worked at Cohen & Steers full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The reputation of the firm is top notch. It is a well-recognized institution in both New York City and globally. Total compensation is extremely competitive.

    Cons

Poor atmosphere and culture. Challenging work-life balance. Difficult to work with senior bankers and managing directors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should focus on improving the overall office culture. An uncomfortable atmosphere does not promote superior performance and diminishes employee morale.
