OK as a temporary job but don't even think of making this company your career!

I worked at Coldwater Creek

Pros

A good place to work if you want to buy clothes with your employee discount prior to returning to a "real" job. Other Sales Associates are, for the most part, great fun, helpful, and hardworking. Plus, the fact that no one works on commission makes everyone willing to help everyone else, which can make for great camaraderie. Most of the customers are very pleasant too. Location is easy to reach, and the parking is good (if you are just slightly clever) even during the holidays.

Cons

Where to start? The store manager and assistant manager, and a number of the leads were energetic, competent, and delightful during my time there. Unfortunately, district and regional management decided to play politics with the Natick store and gutted staff morale. I have never seen managers of that level treat managers beneath them with so little decency or respect. For anyone wishing a career in retail, look elsewhere!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Happily, Dan Griesemer is gone, and Dennis Pence has resumed his job at the helm. First, Mr. Pence needs to clean house at the regional and district level to remove the culture of clubby nastiness that Griesemer fostered. Second, he needs to take a serious look at the typical Coldwater customer, and return to purchasing clothing which appeals to that customer---buying to suit regional tastes (the East is more conservative than the South and West, for heavens sake) would help a lot. Further, when items don't sell, PLEASE mark them down enough to move them out of the stores and the outlets that same season, and don't keep trying to sell them for the next two years for more than anyone is willing to pay. Buyers' mistakes are buyers' mistakes. There is a time to bite the bullet and move on. Finally, ask your buyers to keep the state of the economy in mind when making purchasing decisions for the company---when the economy tanks, customers look for clothes they can wear to interviews and to work, not, and one customer called them, "play clothes." Coldwater could become a great company once more. At the moment, it has a long way to go before anyone should think of seeking a career there.

    I worked at Coldwater Creek

    Pros

Sandpoint is beautiful and fairly unique as the hometown of a large retail company. Great balance between summer and winter activities. The company has a better-than-average paid time off package.

    Cons

The organization is maturing and the entrepreneurial spirit that once drove it has receded somewhat. The churn at the CEO level is concerning, and the higher you go in the company the more obvious it is that the attitude of leadership causes people to suppress information, form alliances, and act in ways that satisfy the top leadership but don't benefit the company. The company is not very diverse in terms of workforce or flexible with working location, hours, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture is very top-down and drives political behavior at all levels. My advice would be to find a new CEO who can drive cultural change and bring Coldwater Creek up to modern standards in terms of flexibility and openness to employee ideas.

I have been working at Coldwater Creek

    Pros

    No pressure Selling
40% disount on non-sale and sale items
    Wonderful work environment
All about making the customers delighted. You are given the ability to go over and beyond to make her happy.

    Cons

There is not a lot of structure around their training program. The tools are available to use, but you must take the initiative to search them out and apply it. You are still held accountable for knowing how to run your business and lead your team by the Coldwater Creek culture, even if it has not been fully communicated to you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try not to make judgement calls based upon age. The company is heavily employed with women aged from 45-55+. There marketing and merchandising is now targeting a demographic of 28-35+, but they have not taken any real action to recruiting and keeping younger talent.
