I worked at Colgate University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It was very meaningful. I had fun working for ResLife. I made a lot of friends in my staff. I learned a lot about myself.

    Cons

The department was disorganized. They were very inefficient and there are a lot of room for improvement. My job could have been made much easier if the department was more competent.

I have been working at Colgate University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You will not get rich working in Acadamia but you can make a respectable salary and a long term career out of it. There are many opportunities to obtain new skill sets and to venture off a little in side projects. No micromanagement in my department, you are really kind of on your own to make or break your career here. Comfortable work environment. Many training opportunities. Good benefits A relaxed work place. There is really is no room for advancement except for moving up to a senior ???, it is a title upgrade and a nice salary bump. Usually 4%-6% annual raises.

    Cons

Lots of meetings and committees. Lots of politics and internal issues amongst departments. You'll have to concede your creative nature and individual styles as everything is done by committee. The process of getting decisions made is very slow and frustrating at times. No one wants to commit to making the final decsion or take responsibility for it.
