I worked at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Coworkers are mostly: 1) recent college grads who work in the job for <1 year while they befriend full-time interpreters and move to that department, 2) broke retirees riding an easy part-time job to the grave

    Beautiful physical surroundings
    Surreal/comical interactions
Free costumes (save money on clothes you can't afford with your salary anyway)
    Free turkey on Thanksgiving, huzzah
    Immediate supervisors are cool
Passionate coworkers/visitors who aren't jaded about CW yet
Work outside if you can get it (even in the summer/winter, it's worth it)

    Cons

Clueless, offensive tourists (exactly like the YouTube series "Ask A Slave")
Coworkers who make up "historic" facts about products to sell them to tourists
Employee hierarchy - everyone assume sales interpreters are idiots
Draconian 5-point sales monologue you'll start reciting in your sleep
Unpaid 30 min. lunch breaks not enough time to make substantial progress in ACT study guide
    Weird coworkers
Constant pressure to upsell & raise your cart size
Employee housing on Duke of Gloucester St. is $$$, brutal competition
    Difficult to transition between departments
You'll stop using contractions and start using "indeed" in everyday speech
Everyone telling you how much "fun" your underpaid, occasionally humiliating job is

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let Colin Campbell and his conservative posse retire ASAP. Decide whether you're running a theme park or a museum. You did good work with introducing more programming from the POV of minorities and women. Continue developing programming about the seedier side of history. Continue pursuing engaging, kid-friendly programming like RevQuest.
