In Central Admin it's all about Power. The only way to succeed is to CYA and say "Yes"

Pros

Good pay, good benefits, great prestige being associated with this institution.

Cons

- Very territorial and bureaucratic.
- So many people are fearful, and do things the way they've always been done.
- Senior management in Central Admin (esp. top Finance leadership) is unwilling to hear any kind of problem or solution or approach unless they've thought about it themselves first.
- It's a command-and-control environment, so you don't get much context about what's going on... you work on a need to know basis.
- Senior Finance management is deceptive and treats people poorly: Publicly ridicules direct reports, displays distrust of direct reports, grants vacation time grudgingly (and you have to ask three times), has only negative things to say about others, won't answer personnel matters that are important to you.

Advice to Management

Live up to your values: Show respect for others.

Columbia University surely attracts the best and brightest (if they don't have any insight to the culture beforehand). However, you can only hope to retain the mediocre if you treat Officers and Staff so poorly.

If you want loyalty, encouragement and support work far better than fear.
