I have been working at Columbia University full-time for less than a year

Pros

Very impressed with the culture and the people. Campus is vibrant, facilities are in reasonably good shape.

Cons

Tough commute to the Upper West Side from East Side. Lot of construction still on-going all over campus, it's usually very loud outside my office.

    Pros

Columbia University is a top Research Institution with good benefits. It will provide you with excellent opportunities to work with internationally known researchers in one of the greatest cities in the world.

    Cons

However, the institution is old and each department is like it's own fiefdom with its unique brand of politics and way of doing things within a very, very entrenched bureaucracy. The worst of it, whether you are seeking an administrative, academic or resarch post is that there are long standing tensions between the academic and the administrative branches of the organization, that prevent the smooth operation of anything. Also, the amount of work and pressure far exceeds what you would expect from the "Ivory tower" and does not seem worth it given the poor compensation, and poor physical work environment. If you are used to corporate America in any way...this will be a shock to the system, to say the least.
