I have been working at Columbia University part-time (less than an year)

Pros

As a part-time librarian, I've been given a lot of cares and attentions from the staffs. The working environment is really comfortable.

Cons

The payment is not so good. After all, it's a job that everybody can do and it requires no technical skills.

I worked at Columbia University as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    -Pretty good hourly pay
    - Good resources and cool classrooms
    - Very nice students
    - The main campus is beautiful, and this is where most people teach
    - Having co-teachers was great
    - Observation and critique was great
    - You can request a schedule that works well for you. There may be some flexibility as to when your classes meet. So if you're not a morning person, you can request a 10 or 11 AM start.

    Cons

    - Not all rooms have internet access and/or built-in projectors
    - Apparently having one lukewarm student review can lead to a meeting with the director
I only taught one session, and got all 4s and 5s out of 5. However, I have heard that a 3 can land you in trouble. Many part-timers have stopped working there because of this.

I have been working at Columbia University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Love working with my teams. Meet new people everyday. Routine work daily. Vacation and sick time ok. Have made some good friends, including co-workers and students. Things has change some for the good and some for the bad..... Have learned alot on how to deal and interact with people from all over the world.

    Cons

Some department are not team players, no room for growth. Have to transfer to new position in order to move up. Trying to union bust. Limited to certain promgrams to study. Pay could be better. Some of the Upper management are not friendly. When new programs or systems are brought in no proper training and some time no real beneifits to emplyees who rely on it as a part of daily task. It may not matter how well you work at it all they see is the color of your skin and you may not get a fair overview because of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Greet employees with smiles. Get employees input on programs that will affected they daily tasks. Have productive meeting that will benefit employees as well as the students.
