I have been working at Columbia University full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Columbia University recruits some of the greatest minds on earth, so working there as an officer of researcher allows you access to truly brilliant individuals. This kind of opportunity is difficult to find and is not to be taken for granted.

Cons

Columbia has a hostile attitude towards promotion in the academic positions. If the department wants to hire a position that the administration doesn't deem sufficient, the hiring does not take place. Also, the cache of working at an Ivy league school effectively allows them to pay less, a common practice, but one with serious consequences in New York City.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Columbia enjoys recruiting academic super stars. This is fine, but those super stars and the departments they are in also need appropriate support, in the form of non-jet-setting tenured professors and adequate research facilities, to continue to be effective. Furthermore, you could allow your soft money staff researchers to have a portion of the overhead secured from existing grants so that they are paid for their efforts in securing new funding.
