    Pros

the people are all very supportive, but also very busy. you are also in touch with so many experts in their fields you can always go to others for help.

    Cons

limited development management wise, and most people there are highly technical. you need to really enjoy your research.

I have been working at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation

    Pros

CSIRO is a generally a nice work environment where work hours are flexible and benefits (especially superannuation) are quite good.

    Cons

Unfortunately, CSIRO is a very politically motivated organization which is very attached to appearances as opposed to real outcomes. Expect to have innovative ideas squashed to accommodate hidden agendas. Expect to spend several years on a project only to find it shelved after management's attention span is exceeded. Failure of management's ability to pick meaningful projects is very evident. Schmoozing up to the boss is the way to advance. A 2-tier promotion structure is evident - those with PhDs vs those without. The formal written performance appraisal protocol is manipulated by the agendas of those with power who do not seem to be very accountable for what they do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CSIRO management needs to refocus to real outcomes (as opposed to appearances) and apply some creativity to pick winners. Reward creative contributors with acknowledgement & promotion. Put some real effort into identifying movers & shakers instead of relying entirely on the formal written reporting structure which promotes managerial laziness & is letting you down badly.
