I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Job security, great retirement/pension plan, good health insurance provided at retirement, union protection for non-management staff, downtown location, 37.5 hour work week (no "extended" hours), flexible work hours, work from home possible one day per week, 4-day work week possible, vested in defined-benefits pension after 10 years

Cons

Dealing with politicians and bureaucratic red tape, downtown location, no parking, less-than-average vacation time, lower salaries than comparable private sector positions, occasional dealing with below-average motivated colleagues, limited opportunities to attend employer-paid conferences and professional development training/events (due to budgetary limitations)

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I was an accounting intern for the Treasury in 2011. It was unpaid, but I learned a lot, and the people who work there are friendly and passionate about what they do.

    Cons

The only real negative about working there was that the internship was unpaid, but I knew that going in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe a transportation compensation package would work. It was a little frustrating having to pay to commute and not get paid.

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, great location downtown, experience working with regulatory and statutory rules give a fantastic perspective on private industry and business in general.

    Cons

Poor work conditions (6 ft high cubicles, 6x8), no upward mobility, poor compensation, forced to join a union, difficult for your work to get recognized, stuck with administration's decisions, can get laid off w/ budget cuts, state jobs make way too many employees complacent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider improving compensation system for those who cover additional workloads, and address the complacency issue. Make working for the government FUN, give it a purpose, inspire the staff, MOVE people.
