Former Employee - Entry Level Substance Abuse Counselor in Chesapeake, VA

I worked at Community Education Centers full-time (less than an year)

Pros

Really didn't see any. You can find other jobs that have the weekends off.

Cons

NO orientation...it is a prison after all and a new work place. Poor leadership and not professional. Didn't have a meeting with HR the 1st week. The leadership didn't seem train the trainer. Paper is rationed, no supplies are given. Not offered a desk area. The list can go on and on.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The very first day should be orientation, before you are taken to the yard. One needs to know what to wear, what is allowed on the yard, and how to handle yourself in case an inmate becomes unruly. Even learn more about the company. Show the counselor their work space; introduce them to their housing unit supervisor. When the offer is made advise the new hire what to wear and bring on the first day and let them know that they will be given an orientation their first day, because they WILL BE AT A PRISON GOING THROUGH SECURITY!!!!! Train the trainer and provide him or her with the printed materials that are needed. Oh, please don't allow staff to have heated discussed in the common area for all to hear, while UPPER leadership stands by. Lets be professional.
