I worked at Community Health Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

It is a large health care organization and has resources to help you gain valuable knowledge. There are some incredibly dedicated people out in the field, at the office sites that know what they are doing that can teach you a lot about the business side to health care.

If you are in certain departments there is great potential for career growth and development.

Cons

The company grew too fast.

The work load would get overwhelming because they did not want to hire more people and then management would drag their feet on replacing open positions.

The attendance policy at PPSI was terrible. What is the point in having sick time if you have to schedule it?

Also when something went wrong they took more time to pin-point a fall guy. It didn't matter who it was or if it was really his/her fault as long as someone could be blamed. I found it highly unprofessional and counter productive.

Disorganization and poor communication are common between departments and no one seems to know who to go to to solve many problems.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn effective consistent communication and get all your departments on the same page.

Just because someone has been with the company a decade or more doesn't mean they know what they are doing.

I worked at Community Health Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I learned more about navigating politics and building relationships than I ever expected to need to know. There are a lot of strong, articulate, intelligent and visionary people at this organization, they are just not permitted to use their strengths.

    Cons

Very large and complex company trying to do business the same way they did when they had 1/4 the hospitals. Poor processes. Poor execution. Company does not invest in employees. Company doesn't value staff. A lot of time and money is wasted because decisions aren't made until the last minute and then systems are deployed with bandaids and the expectation that someone will go back and fix it or complete it later but there never is a later because everyone is moving on the next project. For a complex organization, they continue to partner with small and unsophisticated vendors that lack the ability to deploy a product out of the box. Lots of 'yes' men. Lots of pontificating. Good people that are not rewarded. Under performers continue to survive by flying under the radar and continue to advance because they find someone else to throw under the bus. Silos are solid and difficult to navigate. Lack of vision. Expectations and workload is not only unreasonable but demonstrates how out of touch leadership is. Good people are overworked and working at a level below their paid grade. Under performers coast. Narcissistic behavior is rampant. Turnover is very high - up to 30% in some areas. Lack of transparency regarding next steps or decision making is disturbing. If business model changed and was more progressive, they could be more effective with less staff but no one with decision making power is interested in a change of that magnitude. Goals that impact bonuses are discussed in April, distributed in June and expected to be met by December. Huge disparity with annual increases between teams/SVPs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave. Clean house. Re-evaluate who you want to be in 1 - 2 - 5 - 10 years and then create a published strategic outline of how we need to get there. Stop rewarding under performers, passive aggressive behavior and chaos creators with continued employment. Change how you do business. This is a company that has the potential and footprint to be the best healthcare employer in the world. In order to do that, you have to invest in your team. Provide clear direction to your team and then get out of the way and let them do what you hired them to do. Do away with some of the high level perks (planes, etc.) and low level perks (2-5-10 year pins that everyone throws away), and eliminate the Christmas parties and replace with industry training opportunities and leadership development. There is no internal leadership development. Stop focusing on where the art work goes and who sits where and focus on what you need to do to make this company a company people don't want to leave because they feel valued and a part of something bigger than themselves. Get rid of the guy that humiliates his team and treats them like they are idiots. Take time to look at how your competitors are doing business and being successful and model some of those behaviors. Then think back to when those ideas were pitched to you and you refused to go down that path. Lead the way. You had the idea first...you just didn't listen.

I have been working at Community Health Systems full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Job security, great people to work with, challenging and rewarding. CHS acknowledges there needs to be a cultural change in the IS/IT organization. The change agents are rallying the troops and everyone can feel the difference. Plus, everyone is given an opportunity to affect change and make recommendations. I see CHS becoming an employer of choice - watch out competition...

    Cons

This is truly an organization that grew overnight. If you don't like to roll your sleeves up and work hard, this is not the place for you. There is a lot to work on and improve, both in technology and culture. Don't assume it is all packaged nicely for you to just do your job. We need innovators ready to create efficient processes delivering high quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop employees and continue shifting the culture. Let's cheer the change and not be afraid to be different. If the executive leadership disagrees, then I guess we keep doing it the way we have always done it - point is, no fear.
